The world is becoming such an appalling place to live in. Every day we wake up to hear a disgusting story followed by another, and when we just think that nothing could get more disgusting, we sadly hear much worse. But is it the world that we are living in, or is it the behavior and the actions that we as human beings develop? It’s true that we cannot erase the act of killing from this world, but there are crisp clear punishments for any murderer if the case was proven. Sadly, we are still so behind when it comes to the area of sexual harassment and rape, just for the mere fact that it is considered a shameful thing to and file a case like this for girls and boys here in Egypt and in the Middle East.

Can you imagine how many children, girls, women, and men who have encountered such a grotesque experience and had to live with it? Just because their families ordered them to stay silent, or from the fear of their own families. This “Social Media” so-called generation, has been pressured with the existence of social media platforms that enables predators to blackmail them on. Yes, there were previous cases of sexual assaults throughout history, but with the use of the Internet, they gained an extra weapon to use.

It’s also apparent now that sexual harassers and rapists come from different classes as well, unlike the old misconception that they were related to the poor and lower classes, and blame their unexplained acts to the fact that they can’t get married because they don’t have money. We are beyond this silly excuse now, just like the girls’ revealing outfit ones, because the cases are now coming from all social classes, where boys are raised in communities where they can get married whenever they want, and they might also live abroad with girls from other cultures wearing what suits them. We have to stop coming up with excuses and finding solutions instead.

With the current situation of several rape and harassment cases being talked about, it was heartbreaking to read throughout the groups of Facebook how people decided to deal with their accidents of harassment or rape, and it’s more shocking to hear how the problem comes from the two sides of the story. One of the situations we’ve gone through is about a mom of a 4-year-old girl that knew that a boy in the classroom touched the private parts of her girl. Yes, we know that the boy in this age is not a predator, but he’s at the right age to be taught and educated that this is wrong. Luckily, this mother stepped out and talked to the school and the boy’s parents. The school has added extra classes that explain to kids what is appropriate and what’s not, and at the same time, the parent of the girl got closer to the other parents and they started taking extra care about what’s happening, this is all good, but it was infuriating to hear that some parents approached this one mother, and asked her to keep pushing that matter forward, as their kids have been touched as well, but they don’t want to include their kids’ names and ruin their reputation, and it’s too late for her as she already went out and caused a problem! We are talking about 4 year-old-kids here! What reputation? And what are they ashamed of? This exact mentality is what keeps the act of harassment and rape spreading around like no other. Imagine with this mentality, what would such parents do if they had a teenage girl or an adult that is about to get married and were faced with such an accident? Well, we’ve heard some of the solutions, like sending a girl to live in another country, hiding the girl as if she doesn’t exist, or fixing her a husband that would accept the problem and get her married asap.

The whole process from the ideas embedded about these cases, to the ideology of dealing with such cases is just wrong. Other girls reported that the process of filing a case against a rapist makes it almost impossible to go and do it. From the stares of the men in the Police station to the threats the girl receives from the predator. So, what is the solution to this?

Victims whether they are girls or boys have to feel safe and speak up! This can happen with awareness and the right support. We have had some awareness campaign before, and some efforts to stop harassment, but we need more and we need to be consistent. Awareness should start from homes, where parents should always give their children the space to open up with them and to raise stable educated children. Parents need to come in peace with the fact that there are some problems regarding sexuality that should be handled by experts, and stop thinking about what the community will say. Schools and colleges should have mandatory classes that address the boundaries and educated girls and boys about their bodies in a scientific and normal way to enable girls and boys to speak up and know when something wrong happens. And most importantly, is Law. Victims should feel safe when they go and file a report of such an incident. Regarding the law, according to the National Council for the Rights of Women guarantees that the victim will have full protection whether it’s in the process of filing the case or the following steps that require the court, among their efforts to help girls come forward.

We are aware that the case is more complicated than this, but with the right facilitation and support, we can let justice take place, and with that being said, and with knowing how easy it is to fake or blackmail anyone on social media, let’s all be more responsible and always double-check news before believing or sharing anything we see. It’s easier said than done, but we can at least try and make social media and our lives less toxic.
